Cat's Night Out

47

By snibar

A black cat stalks in the night

You race through the night

Careful to keep out of sight

You pause at the sound of a dog’s lone bark

But your coat is a perfect cover for the dark

Before your presence the night trembles

For it is a black panther that you resemble

Sneaking through the woods you spot your prey

You pounce creating a beautiful display

A last cry escapes the mouse’s jaw

Through his bones your teeth now saw

Triumphant once again you leave the night

To return to the warm fire light

I have always loved cats, I love the way they move and hunt. I have watched a black cat I owned for many years slip in and out of the house into the night. It was always fun to watch him vanish into the darkness and suddenly emerge from it again. I also loved the way he looked like a miniature panther. Everything about him was a perfect predator in a miniature sized package. I just wrote this poem based upon what I thought happened in his excursions. It didn't take me long to write, but in the end I thought it came out pretty good.
